Toilet work sits inside our wider tap and toilet services run, so a troublesome mixer on the same visit never needs a second booking.

Toilet Suite Types Compared

Three suite types cover nearly every install, and the difference is where the cistern and pan sit.

  1. Close-coupled

the cistern bolts straight onto the rear of the pan as one unit.

  2. Back-to-wall

the pan rests flush against the wall, and the pipe work behind stays hidden.

  3. Wall-hung

the pan mounts on a support frame inside the wall, usually with the cistern concealed behind a flush plate.

You can swap the cistern alone when the replacement matches the pan's fixing points and connections. When it doesn't, the entire suite gets replaced.

Faults inside an old cistern, from constant running to a weak rinse, belong with toilet repairs rather than a new install.

Pan Outlets and Toilet Set-Out Explained

Set-out is where the pan's waste outlet sits: its measured spot in the floor or the wall. A fresh pan plugs straight onto the waste point already there when its own outlet lands on that spot.

An S-trap pan bends its waste down and out below the pan. A P-trap pan bends back and sends the waste out through the wall behind. When a new pan's outlet misses the waste position, the plumber alters the waste pipe or picks a pan whose outlet fits.

Flush Volumes and Star Ratings for New Toilets

A dual flush cistern keeps two volumes: one button releases a small half flush, the other a bigger full flush. Every new suite needs WaterMark certification and registration under the national water rating scheme (WELS) before it can legally go in.

The rules then split by building:

  • New builds carry a minimum: a dual flush model rated 4 stars or better in every new house or townhouse, and in each self-contained unit of an apartment building.
  • Business Queensland states renovations sit outside that rule.
  • Rentals run on a different test. A dual flush cistern clears it with a full flush of 6.5 litres or less and a half flush of 3.5 or less. The average flush, counted as one full flush plus four half flushes, cannot go over 4 litres.

Toilet Installation and the Form 4

Installing a toilet is licensed work in Queensland, and the category decides the paperwork.

  • A new or relocated loo in an existing building is notifiable work: no council permit, and the plumber lodges a Form 4 with the QBCC inside 10 business days of finishing.
  • Swapping an existing suite where it stands is minor work: a QBCC licensee handles it, with no permit and no Form 4.
  • Altering the waste pipe is notifiable work as well, in any existing building.

The QBCC audits that Form 4s get lodged, and skipping one is an offence. Not sure which category your job falls in? The QBCC's online questionnaire settles it.

Only three cistern parts sit outside the licensed rules: the drop valve washer, the float valve washer and the suction cup rubber. The QBCC lists those as unregulated, though the work still has to meet the standards.

The contractor lodges the Form 4 and pays its fee, and can pass that cost plus admin on to you.

What Changes the Price of a New Toilet Job

Five things push the price, and the fixed quote locks it in before work starts.

  • The suite type.
  • Whether the pan's outlet lands on the existing waste point, or the waste needs altering.
  • Whether the toilet keeps its current position.
  • How easily the supply and waste can be reached.
  • The Form 4 lodgement fee, which the contractor pays and may pass on.

Older Cottages and New Suites

In Albion, toilet installation lands on two very different housing eras, and each brings its own bathroom jobs.

The pre-1940 workers' cottages were first plumbed generations back, and some still run a single-flush cistern that predates dual flush altogether. Swapping one of those trims the water use along with the bathroom.

Older owners often ask us for a pan at comfort height, which stands taller and is easier on the knees. At the last census most homes in the suburb were rented, so the flush limits above matter to a fair share of landlords too.

Questions Before a New Loo

Call (07) 3523 7172

How much does it cost to install a toilet in Albion?

Two drivers move the price most: the suite type, and whether the pan's outlet sits over the existing waste point or the waste needs altering. A fixed quote before work starts sets the final figure.

What WELS rating does a new toilet need?

New builds need 4 stars or better on a dual flush model, whether that's a new house, a townhouse or a self-contained unit in an apartment building. Business Queensland excludes renovations. Every toilet also needs WaterMark certification and WELS registration before it can legally go in.

What flush volumes must a rental toilet meet?

A rental loo passes the water-charging test on a full flush of 6.5 litres or less, a half flush of 3.5 or less, and an average of 4 or less. The average counts one full flush plus four half flushes. Meeting that test is what lets an owner charge a tenant for all water.

Does a landlord have to replace an old rental toilet?

No, the flush limits set what an owner can charge for, not what gets replaced. Where a rental is not water efficient, the owner pays a reasonable amount of the bill. A tenant pays the excess only where the place is individually metered and the agreement says so.

What is the difference between an S-trap and a P-trap toilet?

The trap is the bend the waste travels through: an S-trap bends down and exits below, a P-trap bends back and exits through the wall. The outlet your Albion bathroom was built with decides which pan fits.
